Americana Singer-Songwriter Piper Hays Releases Lyric Video for "Going Down Together"
Piper Hays is made of grit and gravel. She’s young, but shadows and history trail behind her. On her debut album, Vagablonde, the Americana singer-songwriter layers strands of dark outlaw country with a soulful vibe, best displayed on album opener “Going Down Together.”
“‘Going Down Together’ is a song about understanding and acceptance,” Piper tells The Music Mermaid about the track, “[and] knowing that you may not be in the best place but realizing that regardless of obstacles like distance or time, you aren’t alone on the journey. So you just have to say ‘screw it’ and make the best out of what you’re given.”
It’s the “screw it” part of Piper’s explanation that sets the tone for “Going Down Together.” She’s right — it is a sweet song about understanding, but there’s an undeniable edge to it in its middle-finger-up treatment, an endlessly dark soundscape sweetened only occasionally by twangy strums and softer vocal delivery. “Going Down Together” opens with a punch. Led by steady smacks of percussion, it moves into a creeping, slightly crazed arrangement of Piper’s drowsy vocals and edgy riffs. It mostly maintains its darkness, but there’s an outlaw country twang to it that brightens up the space even though some of the song’s eeriest moments resound in that Americana flavor. From beginning to end, “Going Down Together” is a grooving alt-country effort that aims to give you goosebumps.
