R&B Artist Ruben Young Returns With Slick New Single "Golden Hell"
Ruben Young’s been making waves — big, crashing waves against the shore of modern R&B. Last year he came to attention with his smash single “Rachel Green,” an addictive ode to TV’s it-girl that made its way onto our 50 Favorite Songs of 2018 list. Now Ruben returns with “Golden Hell,” his first release of what is sure to be a busy year for the emerging R&B artist.
Where “Rachel Green” was punchy and begging for attention, “Golden Hell” resides more on the subtle side, slick with slow synth. Opening with Ruben’s dreamy falsetto, the song pulses with staccato beats and synth trills before moving into a quick, cool atmosphere of deep, distant bass tones. Every once in a while, the smooth sea of “Golden Hell” parts to welcome a fresh burst of Ruben’s rasp, smacking R&B rhythms, and swells of synth. It’s a deliciously sleek soundscape that dazzles with bubbling electronics and clean production — the result is a soulful single drowsy with layers of warbling synth.
