Commonweather Are Coming For The Alt-Rock Crown With "Mellow Drama"
Commonweather keep getting it right. There are no moments of doubt or hiatuses keeping the Chicago alt-rockers from delivering more of their searing, roaring anthems — they just do it over and over again.
Last week, the band released Sugar Sun, their new EP, featuring three tracks of their signature poesy disguised as in-your-face rock arrangements. The EP’s lead single, “Mellow Drama,” dropped last month, serving to hype up listeners with Commonweather’s best effort to date. Hear what frontperson Justin Olin had to say about the track below:
Frankly, “Mellow Drama” was the only possible choice for lead single. It’s the quintessential alt-rock rager, three perfect minutes that prove Commonweather is a band with a big heart and a smart soul. Despite its fleeting nature, “Mellow Drama” delivers all that we want from Commonweather — dark energy drenched in power, unrelenting percussion, hum and buzz of multi-instrumental camaraderie, aching howl — and delivers it with a thoughtfulness we barely deserve. As the band hammer out a contemplation of communication, we’re treated to a distinct kind of catharsis we can only get from Commonweather. “Mellow Drama” isn’t just real and reflective — attributes that turn a song into a story into a credo — it’s also heavy with hard-rock energy that makes it unarguably anthemic.
