CXLOE ft. gnash Deliver Dark-Pop Anthem "SICK"
Every single day, songs are made with the get-stuck-in-your-head recipe — a catchy hook, quick drum pad beats, an easy guitar riff — but it’s only once in a while that one of those songs has us playing it on a loop willingly.
Most recently, that song is “SICK” by Sydney-born dark-pop artist CXLOE ft. rapper gnash. Despite its radio-recipe nature, it’s hard to get (pun intended) sick of it. It’s just really well-executed so you genuinely want to hear it over and over again — CXLOE’s voice is a breathy, cool-toned wisp that gains urgency in falsetto crescendos and frantic belting as “SICK” goes on, treating listeners to many moments of vocal versatility that never deviate from the melting ice core of her voice. Meanwhile, the soundscape of “SICK” is given the top-chart treatment: it’s easy to follow because it’s decked out in drum pad pops and clouds of electronica but there’s a depth to it in the way every element collides into one another with this glitching, zipping sound. “SICK” is a feat of anthemic dark-pop excellence we’ll only ever want more of.
