Exclusive: Synth-Pop Duo GOLDS Drop New Single "Technicolor"
Last year, two good friends merged their talents in songwriting and production to form GOLDS, a Chicago-based duo putting out a one-of-a-kind brand of emotional indie-pop. Since their formation, the guys have dropped five gorgeous singles running the gamut from heart-heavy piano ballads to punchy dance anthems and more. Today, we are stoked to introduce GOLDS’ sixth single, “Technicolor,” what the guys refer to as their most mature effort yet.
Hear Nate and Andrew of GOLDS talk through their new release in our exclusive audio quote below:
Like Nate says, “Technicolor” went through a bunch of variations before GOLDS settled on a stream-of-consciousness approach, an intense take on a thoughtful topic. The thing about “Technicolor” is that it endures an evolution — much like its focus on the winding path of relationships, the song itself moves throughout a constantly changing trajectory. Its wild, wavering style proves just how talented the guys of GOLDS are. They’ve created something special and something surprising — that’s what makes their new single so powerful.
“Technicolor” opens with a sparkling piano line, the plink of keys seeming to shimmer, extended in mid-air. It’s a gorgeous interlude to Nate’s aching croon that comes in confessing. Beneath his emotional delivery, a busy arrangement begins to bloom — the steady clack of percussion, subtle synth blooms, and ghostly wisps of harmony. For nearly a minute and a half, the track takes its time, inching forward a little at a time to keep a steady pace until the composition morphs into a jangling, colorful explosion before settling back in again for breathy falsetto and dreamy slow-burn tones. Later, when the drums bow out and the piano returns with a few low beats, there’s a stunning moment of emotion overpowered quickly by the buzzing smash of warring synth and percussion, each element of a carefully constructed arrangement losing itself in favor of a frenzied, searing breakdown that ends abruptly, a technicolor tune gone far too soon. Together, Nate and Andrew craft an electric synth ballad built on unapologetic emotion.
