Exclusive: Chicago Power-Pop Outfit Bandy Release Punchy New Single "Passing The Rhyme"
You haven’t heard post-punk means power-pop until you hear Bandy do it. Hailing from Chicago, the genre-blending group are set to release their new full-length, The Challengers, in just a few weeks, so they’re teasing out a couple killer singles to get the party started.
Today, The Music Mermaid is stoked to exclusively premiere “Passing The Rhyme,” the record’s third single. Hear what Adam from Bandy told us about the new track below:
“Passing The Rhyme” opens drunkenly, but not in a belligerent way. There’s just a drowsiness to the lazing vocals that deliver conversational lyrics above a groggy riff. Soon, though, things start to pick up — just a little. Bandy take their time with the chaos, so before we get to their punchy power, we travel through layers of increasing energy. Steady drum beats tap out an unrelenting rock rhythm for a while, relatively peaceful and keeping to itself, until “Passing The Rhyme” calls for some zest. Suddenly, the vocals move faster and so does the percussion, pounding away in rapid-fire slaps before bowing out as quickly as it came in to illuminate a brief piano sparkle and some tender reflection. Weaving in and out of the clouds they’ve built (cumulus for the sweet garage-rock fuzz, cirrus for the softer moments waiting to pounce), Bandy eventually merge their multi-instrumental talents for an exuberant end as the song dissolves into a cacophonous eruption of the power-pop we didn’t know we wanted or needed until Bandy brought it to us.
