Hip-Hop Trio Variations Of Light Make Their Debut With "Petty Love"
What do you get when you combine the talents of producer Alnitak Kid, vocalist Nelson Dialect, and keyboardist Nate88?
You get Variations Of Light, an Australian trio whose sound defies convention. It’s not quite enough to say they’re a hip-hop group or soul-shakers or something totally defined, because with just two singles under their belt so far, it’s clear that Variations Of Light will crack open a fresh kind of sound with each new release.
On their debut single “Petty Love,” for instance, the trio offer a slick neo-soul track accompanied by the velvet vocals of Detroit-based singer Melanie Rutherford. Opening with a dark, pumping rhythm, “Petty Love” spends a few seconds tricking us into thinking we’re about to dive into the shadow realm before softening into a mellow soundscape of quick drum pad beats, Melanie’s dreamy vocals, and little bursts of synth unfolding far off in the distance. For under four minutes, Variations Of Light deliver a well-crafted composition that highlights their old-school vibes and suggests that the trio will only continue to delight listeners — which is exactly what they do with their second single, “Overlook Hotel,” a masterful track that finds the band delivering classic, slow-burning hip-hop.
