Here's To You and All Their Angsty Energy on "Burning Alive"
For the first time since 2015, Long Island based indie-rock band Here’s To You return with some high-energy new releases. Having formed over a decade ago, the guys are no strangers to the wild timeline of making music. Maybe time’s been good to them — on their latest single “Burning Alive” and its music video accompaniment, it’s clear that with age often comes experience.
“The way this song came to be was kind of crazy and all happened at once. Greg had around 8 bars of this instrumental laid out in a demo, and Charlie took it home and started writing about this crazy, nostalgic, and surreal night he had while visiting his friend at college,” Here’s To You told The Music Mermaid. “Stephan and Mike came in and effortlessly improved on the song’s structure and parts. It is one of the fastest songs we’ve ever written with each other and it quickly became one of our favorites!”
“Burning Alive” is dynamic all the way through. There are no quiet moments or major comedowns, except maybe when the percussion calms a little for a tender spotlight on the vocals. The song kicks off right away with a searing guitar line and bouncy percussion before strong lead vocals join the pop-punk arrangement to narrate that surreal story the band told us about. It’s an anthemic piece, built on the buzz and bustle of alt-rock rhythms, a howled hook, and flavorful multi-instrumentation.
The music video (by videographer Samantha Hollinde) captures this angsty energy through a revolving set of impassioned performance footage, bokeh-ridden close-ups, warm b-roll, and neon details. There are endless shots here interspersed without any real structure, but that’s exactly why it mimics the desperate, frenzied tone of the song. “Burning Alive” is a high-powered anthem tossed into a colorful pop-rock soundscape, begging to be played at top volume.
