Exclusive: Electronic Producer Golden Grey Releases Dynamite New Single "One"
Inspired by the chime and clang and color of electronica, Alberta-based producer Golden Grey has come into his own in recent years, crafting a dizzying brand of synth-based compositions. Last year, Golden Grey made his formal debut with Colours, a half-hour long excursion into the depths of which color meets music. Cinematic in its sprawling crescendos but subtle enough to pulse, the EP set in motion what will become a long, impressive journey for the producer.
Today, The Music Mermaid is stoked to exclusively premiere Golden Grey’s brand new single, “One.”
Hear Golden Grey introduce the track below:
Though Colours was primarily instrumental, Golden Grey explores new territory on “One,” leading a shadowy electronic composition with breathy vocals. Quick synth beats burst and fizzle in rapid succession at the song’s very beginning — they fall in and out of the piece, sent spiraling up like flares before plummeting back down. Automatically, “One” has layers. When Golden Grey’s voice comes in singing, “Here we are again / My one and only friend / Let’s take a ride down memory lane,” a new strand of emotion is detected. The music itself was erratic, sure, but it wasn’t quite as anxious until the vocals joined, and then suddenly it’s morphed into this tender, important thing you can feel slowly unraveling. Deep trills of keys and smacks of percussion begin to bloom in the distance, each sonic element popping up out of seemingly nowhere to grow what becomes an amorphous amalgamation of jittery electronica. As Golden Grey breathes his dreamy croon, “One” throbs with an insistent pulse sent mapping the distance between its dinging beginnings to its dark end.
