R&B Songstress MAAD Drops Sensuous Music Video For "New Religion"
Don't get mad. Get MAAD.
A jack-of-all-trades creative with undeniable talent, MAAD dabbles in modeling and DJing, but right now we're obsessed with her pulsing pop anthems like "New Religion."
"New Religion" opens with fizzy crackles and subtle bouncing rhythms before MAAD's smooth vocals come in, singing "Of all the dreams I've had, baby, you were my favorite / Out of all the songs I've sung, this is the one." Rolling like waves beyond those airy vocals is a vibrant soundscape of funk beats, a relentlessly pounding bassline, and in-your-face percussion. For three minutes, the song soars with layers upon layers of smoky energy and sultry synth buzzes. MAAD does vocal gymnastics, sweeping falsettos providing an emotional delivery for most of the track but slackening at softer points for steady, cooler tones. "New Religion" is awash in dynamic multi-instrumentation, an addictive R&B thumper destined for endless repetition.
MAAD doesn't stop there though. She even gives us some visual accompaniment with "New Religion"'s gorgeous music video, directed by Paulo Berberan for VHS Productions. The video finds MAAD (and a partner) lost and languishing in a sparse, arid, seemingly post-apocalyptic landscape. Stunning sun-dappled shots and emotive dance scenes share the screen while the two characters share the emptiness.
We asked MAAD to talk a bit about the process and here's what she had to say:
"I wanted to create a visual that told the story of two people connecting in an isolated setting as if they were the only ones left on earth but [had] somehow found each other along the way.
I'm so happy I was able to have Paulo direct this video especially being that he's based in London and just so happened to be planning a trip to Cali around the same time I was looking for someone to shoot a video for "New Religion." He truly has a way of capturing everything so artistically and beautifully."
From MAAD herself, there you have it: an exquisitely minimalist music video for an R&B anthem that entices and entrances. Watch the video for "New Religion" below and connect with MAAD on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
