Singer-Songwriter Kris Gruen Releases New Single "Body Divine"
The last time we covered Kris Gruen, he had just released his latest solo album, Coast & Refuge, a record rich with the unraveling of pop, rock, and folk strands working anew together to craft earnest singalongs.
Now, Kris returns with his newest single, “Body Divine.” A mass collaboration between himself, folk artist Marlene Oak on songwriting assist, and Charleston-based duo Maggie Valley, it’s an epic smash of folk-rock like we haven’t heard from Kris before.
When “Body Divine” kicks off, it does so in this dark, grunge-y cloud of rock gaining volume and energy before Kris’ voice comes in to flavor the composition with a slight country twang. Dreamy harmony delivers the song’s hook quickly as the arrangement pounds and pulses with steady percussion, complex rhythm lines, and distant swells of synth. Somewhere between a raging rock anthem and an ethereal folk ditty, “Body Divine” manages to merge two warring worlds for an addictive folk-rock romp built by a slew of high-quality musicians.
