Semler Releases Haunting New Single "Before We're Dead"
Grace Semler Baldridge does it all. There’s nothing she can’t tap into to get to the core of — across her many vlogging projects, she uncovers things about herself and others in ways both sweet, sincere, and silly. With her music, though, she darkens. Having crafted a distinct sound shrouded in shadows as Semler, the Los Angeles singer-songwriter trudges through dark folk efforts.
On her newest single “Before We’re Dead,” Grace delivers one of her most haunting pieces yet. Hear what she had to tell The Music Mermaid about it below:
“Before We’re Dead” opens on the tender roll of acoustic strums before Semler’s hypnotic breath of a voice floats into the spotlight. The arrangement is soft and simple, allowing the vocals to lead what will become a masterful ballad. Touched by the sear of strings wailing in the distance and jarring booms of percussion like the echo of a stomp, “Before We’re Dead” maintains its lush dreamworld while simultaneously transforming into an orchestral composition that hums and haunts. For a while it travels through subtle layers of spooky folk rhythms but when it gains the courage to burst, “Before We’re Dead” becomes something wholly unexpected — something grandiose and screaming and stirring in ways that awaken the soul we thought it wanted to put to sleep. With her new single, Semler brings to life a world long dead; the creeping, wispy crescendos of dark folk from far beyond the grave.
