Texas Singer-Songwriter Will Johnson Releases Stunning Single "A Solitary Slip"
Some songs are a deep purple like a breakup ballad or bright yellow like a summer anthem. The newest single from Texas singer-songwriter (and talented painter) Will Johnson is awash in amber and dust, a quiet covering of sad, soft hues.
"‘A Solitary Slip’ is a nod of appreciation to my wife, mostly for her tolerance of my efforts amidst a backdrop of clumsiness, forgetfulness, failing hearing, and other shortcomings,” Will Johnson tells The Music Mermaid. “We spend a lot of time together, so I find the need to address this on occasion."
Released a few weeks ago in preparation of his upcoming full-length album, Wire Mountain, out next month on Keeled Scales, “A Solitary Slip” isn’t as gut-punching as it sounds and feels if you really think about it. At its simplest — or maybe at its most complex — it’s a love letter. Will Johnson is so effective at painting soundscapes steeped in this unique kind of emotional limbo, bighearted sentiment humble enough to hum instead of scream, so the result of “A Solitary Slip” is a wistful wisp of dreamy gratitude floating on clouds of plucky folk melody. In all its soft glory, it lives.
