Watch TJ Stafford's Emotional Video For His Haunting Single, "Catch"
With a brooding intensity and deep, harrowing lyrics, rock singer-songwriter TJ Stafford is using his music as a platform for uncovering his demons.
In his single, "Catch," off his newest record All My Bad Habits Have Prepared Me For This, Stafford confesses a desperate story of a love gone wrong -- a relationship whose intensity is no match for its demons. The four-minute track has a lingering power, low tones of creeping beats and a shy, pulsing piano rhythm moving slowly for a minute while Stafford's breathy, grunge-y voice croons bittersweet lyrics like "I'm sorry that I loved you / I'm sorry that I stayed." Eventually, "Catch" erupts with an eerie, layered arrangement with a schizophrenic urgency.
The music video for "Catch" is equally disarming. Even gorgeous scenic shots of the ocean can't save a hopeless love. As Stafford walks aimlessly around the beach, viewers are introduced to his counterpart, the beautiful Camila Greenberg acting as his lover. The video moves through dark scenes of Stafford singing and fleeting emotional moments where Stafford and Greenberg are together, then, just as quickly, are not. Overall, "Catch" is a gripping cinematic story of what happens when your demons are just too strong for your love.
