UK Alt-Rockers St. Buryan Release Emotional New Single "Breathe Deep"
A few months ago, UK band St. Buryan released “Giving In,” a high-energy single at the absolute top of its raging, rollicking alt-rock game. It was everything you’d want in a slinking anthem — it was intense but it took its time, it had searing guitar riffs, it featured pounding percussion.
Today, though, St. Buryan are back with a new single that veers far from the band’s edgy rock romps. With “Breathe Deep,” the guys tackle something much slower and lusher than what they’ve previously given us.
Where most of St. Buryan’s discography kicks off with grunge-y rhythm lines or at least a smash of percussion, “Breathe Deep” blooms from the get-go with a reverberating cloud of synth before the rest of the arrangement falls quickly into place. There’s a quirky, twangy guitar line, steady, sparkling drum beats, and an obvious sense of instrumental camaraderie that finds St. Buryan together at their most vulnerable. Even the vocals deliver shaky confessions, sending thoughtful lyrics out into the dreamy ether of the band’s sweet synth-rock effort.
This isn’t the St. Buryan we know and love — it’s the St. Buryan we haven’t quite gotten to know yet but love just the same, the St. Buryan stripped of frills and throbs and thrums. “Breathe Deep” serves as a welcome introduction to the band’s softer side while still maintaining the high-caliber of rock skill we already knew they were capable of.
